How I find creative inspiration in my travels

I have been fortunate enough to do a fair amount of traveling throughout my life both as a player and as a tourist. I always try to seek out local musicians when I am in different countries. My most recent exotic locale was Nepal back in 2014 and it was amazing to hear the various influences in Nepalese music. You hear a little Chinese influence and you hear a little bit of Indian influence. Talking to the local musicians really helps to create a sense as to how music is truly the universal language. The locations themselves (case in point the majestic Himalayan mountains) also inspire me and leave me with amazing impressions that sometimes filter down to the music that I write.

Advice for new artists

Frank Zappa once said “there is more business than music in the music business.” That quote has always stuck with me. I think it’s essential that musicians educate themselves as to the business that they are in. There are ever-changing laws and new revenue streams (and pitfalls) to be aware of. I also strongly advise that anyone who is entering into any kind of contract be sure to retain the services of a Music attorney. Bad contracts are like a trap: They’re much easier getting into than getting out of.

Make your own luck

I feel extremely fortunate that I have been able to accomplish some of the goals that I set for myself as a young musician. In addition to a lot of hard work in making sure I had the skills to compete, there was certainly a bit of luck in being in the right place at the right time, however I am reminded of the saying that ‘you make your own luck.’ I got to do some pretty extraordinary things such as going on tour with Bon Jovi, opening for childhood heroes Aerosmith and Van Halen, and playing to large audiences all over the world. Making 6 MTV videos and appearing in the Wayne’s World movies as the guitarist in Tia Carrere’s band was also a career highlight.
